The Best of 2009 Blog Challenge
December 21: Project. What did you start this year that you’re proud of?

I am rarely proud of my own work, and I’m not sure one would call running a “project,” but starting my half-marathon training is something I really am proud of. For years, I have made occasional, halfhearted attempts at joining Gregory in running, and I even jogged/walked a half-marathon a few years ago, with zero training (I literally could not move the next day). But about a month ago, I started training for real, 6 days a week, and I plan to run the Austin half-marathon with my mom (a bona fide marathon runner) and Gregory on Valentine’s Day/Chinese New Year 2010.

Although I have never been an athletic person, and I despise the cold weather we are running in, I have surprised myself with my dedication and growing strength and willpower (and sense of fun, even!). I feel kind of corny admitting it, but the psychological benefits are amazing, too – the sense of accomplishment each time I push myself to run a little bit farther (and just to run at all on days I feel tired or cold or not in the mood), and my newfound confidence and optimism. Yay!
